What is Yi Peng
Yi Peng: A Celebration of Three Lights
Yi Peng comes alive through three timeless traditions:
• Sky Lanterns (Khomloy) — releasing misfortune and welcoming hope
• Krathong — floating offerings of gratitude and love
• Phang Pratheep — candlelight symbols of wisdom and guidance
At the Chiangmai CAD Khomloy Sky Lantern Festival 2026, experience all three lights in one unforgettable celebration.
The term “Yi Peng” comes from the Lanna language and is composed of two words: “Yi,” meaning the second month in the Lanna calendar, which corresponds to November, and “Peng,” meaning the full moon night.
Yi Peng is an ancient festival dating back to the Lanna Kingdom, during which both the people and the kings would gather to pay homage and worship at various temples.
There are several beliefs associated with the Yi Peng Festival and the release of sky lanterns. It is believed to be an act of worship to the Goddess of the River (Phra Mae Khongkha), who provides water for agriculture, and also a way of honoring the Buddha’s footprint on the banks of the Nammada River according to Buddhist tradition. Local people also believe that releasing lanterns and floating krathongs symbolizes letting go of misfortune, bad luck, and negative things in life, allowing a new beginning filled with good fortune and happiness.
